Finidi George Appointed Head Coach of Nigeria

Former Super Eagles Player to Lead National Team

Lagos, Nigeria - Finidi George, a former Nigerian international player, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Nigeria national football team. George, who previously served as the assistant coach of the team, takes over from Jose Peseiro, who was fired after the team's poor performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

George, who had a successful playing career with clubs such as Ajax, Real Betis, and Ipswich Town, has limited coaching experience. He had a brief stint as the head coach of Enyimba, a Nigerian club, in 2021, but left after just two games.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed confidence in George's ability to lead the team to success. "We believe that Finidi George has the qualities necessary to take the Super Eagles to the next level," said NFF President Amaju Pinnick. "He has a proven track record as a player, and we are confident that he can translate that success to his role as a coach."

George's first assignment will be the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin in March. The Super Eagles will face Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Rwanda in Group G.
